Ares RG One-Shot Crisis: Marathon 1.0.6.2 Nerf Reshapes Ranked Sniping

THE ARES PROBLEM IS SOLVED

Patch 1.0.6.2 addresses the Ares RG - Railgun one-shot problem that's dominated ranked conversations since launch. While the patch notes don't detail exact damage numbers, Bungie's messaging is clear — the railgun that could delete any shell from full health is getting reined in. For ranked players, this is the biggest meta shift since the WSTR Combat Shotgun - Shotgun nerfs.

The Ares RG sits in the database at 123 damage with 60 RPM and 4-shot mag capacity. At long range, it was the only weapon guaranteed to eliminate any shell in a single precision hit. Thief - Stealth runners with 90 HP could be bodyshotted for instant elimination. Even Destroyer - Combat's 175 HP meant death from a headshot. This created an oppressive ranked environment where positioning meant nothing against good Ares users.

SNIPER RIFLE META REBALANCE

With Ares damage reduced, the sniper rifle hierarchy completely shifts. Outland - Sniper Rifle (74 damage, 43 RPM) becomes the precision sniper choice for ranked climbers. Its damage profile now sits above the nerfed Ares while maintaining superior handling characteristics. The Longshot - Sniper Rifle at 69 damage holds steady as the reliable mid-tier option.

V99 Channel Rifle - Sniper Rifle users get an indirect buff. At 67 damage with 75 RPM and 33-round mag, the volt-powered sniper was already A-tier across solo and squad ranked. Now it's the clear choice for volume sniping without Ares threat of instant deletion. The charge mechanic rewards sustained positioning while the large magazine enables multiple engagements per reload cycle.

SHELL SURVIVABILITY REVOLUTION

Every shell becomes more viable in ranked post-patch. Thief's S-tier solo rating was built around speed and stealth compensating for 90 HP vulnerability. With Ares bodyshot lethality removed, Thief can take more aggressive positioning for Holotag theft without fear of instant elimination from unknown angles.

Assassin - Stealth benefits similarly. The shell's 100 HP made it a priority Ares target in squad ranked. Shadow Strike builds using the Prestige core can now engage more confidently, knowing precision shots won't guarantee death. Active Camo positioning becomes less about avoiding sightlines and more about optimal engagement timing.

RANKED LOADOUT ADJUSTMENTS

Immediate swaps for ranked climbers: drop Ares RG builds entirely until damage numbers stabilize. Outland becomes the new precision sniper standard with Long Eye Scope - Optic MOD - Superior and Pinpoint Barrel - Barrel MOD - Superior for maximum range effectiveness. V99 Channel Rifle with Charge-coupled Optic - Optic MOD - Prestige creates sustainable sniper pressure without the one-shot dependency.

Close-range shells like Destroyer and Vandal - Combat gain positioning freedom. Search and Destroy builds can advance more aggressively knowing long-range elimination threat is reduced. Tactical Sprint engagements become more viable when railgun users can't instantly punish overextension.

The grenade spam fix mentioned in patch notes also impacts ranked, though details remain unclear. If area-of-effect abilities see cooldown increases or damage reduction, expect more weapon-focused engagements and less ability spam in contested Holotag zones.

The Ares nerf hits hard — removing one-shot delete potential fundamentally collapses the utility that made it 47% of ranked primary picks last week. Ranked sniper economy resets now; expect rapid pivot to Hitscan and charge-time builds within 72 hours as players test new one-tap windows. This is tier-1 meta surgery, same magnitude as the WSTR collapse they reference.

Reddit's ranked megathread is already split hard on this one—top comment says "finally playable" but the replies are all snipers arguing Bungie gutted positioning rewards. Steam reviews haven't caught up yet, but give it 48 hours; the one-shot community is loud and organized.
