THE PATCH CONTEXT: WHAT CHANGED AND WHY IT MATTERS
Update 1.1.0.2 and the accompanying economy dev note landed this week, and they hit Cradle progression harder than most players expected. Bluenique weapon XP dropped from 1,500 to 700. Superior mod XP was cut from 2,500 to 1,000. Prestige mod XP fell from 7,500 to 3,750. Bungie confirmed the average player wealth in week two was sitting where week eleven looked in Season 1 — a full order of magnitude ahead of intent. The Cradle nerf is the downstream consequence.
What does this mean for builds? The free-respec Cradle is still free to re-spec, but reaching the deeper breakpoints — the 14-Energy perks on any track — now takes materially longer. This is the cycle to design a build that runs efficiently at mid-depth Cradle investment, not one that assumes a fully loaded profile. The AssassinStealth's Shadow Strike KnifeMelee engine fits that constraint precisely.
THE WIN CONDITION
The Assassin's win condition here is simple to state and hard to stop: stay invisible, close to knife range, and delete one Runner with a single confirmed backstab before the engagement officially starts. The Shadow Strike Prestige core reads "greatly increased damage when attacking from invisibility," and the Silent Killer Prestige core layers on top with "massive bonus damage from melee attacks from behind while cloaked." Stack those two and the Knife — listed at 80 base damage, [UNVERIFIED] on full stat confirmation — becomes a one-cycle tool on targets who haven't topped their hardware.
The secondary weapon exists to clean up. The BR33 Volley RiflePrecision Rifle at 14 damage and 900 RPM with a Combat MagMagazine MODEnhanced (Superior) giving +20 range and +6 magazine provides a reliable finisher if the knife doesn't fully close the deal. The long barrel Farshot BarrelBarrel MODDeluxe (Superior) adds a further +45 range and tightens ADS spread by 0.2 — this gun wants to punish anyone fleeing out of smoke rather than be your opener.
The Smoke Screen prime and Shroud trait are the enablers. Shroud automatically cloaks you inside any smoke field, meaning every prime deployment is a free re-entry into invisibility. Guerrilla (Superior core) accelerates Active Camo and Shadow Dive recharge specifically while you're in smoke — so you're cycling back into the knife window faster than opponents can anticipate the re-engage. Cloak and Dagger (Superior core) extends Smoke Cloud duration and radius, widening the window where Shroud keeps you invisible. Flexweave Casing (Deluxe core) increases movement speed and weapon ready speed while invisible — this is the quality-of-life piece that makes the knife lunge feel clean rather than floaty.
CRADLE PATH — MID-DEPTH VIABLE
Post-patch, I'm designing this Cradle for the 28–32 Energy range rather than assuming 42+. Here's the priority order:
Strength track is your first investment. Hit the Close & Personal perk at 11 Energy — knife attacks generate less heat, which matters because you're entering and exiting melee range repeatedly. If you push to 14 you pick up Leech, which restores health on knife hits. That's a meaningful survivability band for a shell sitting at 100 HP and 25 shield — take it when you can afford it.
Endurance track second. Quick Vent at 3 Energy is almost free and begins heat recovery faster after Active Camo and Shadow Dive activations. Heat Dissipation at 9 Energy improves that recovery rate further. The Assassin's low base health means you cannot afford to be stuck overheated when a second Runner pushes the smoke.
Recharge track third, and only to Head Start at 4 Energy — starting runs with partial Tactical charge means your first Active Camo is available almost immediately on infil, before you've found your first engagement. The /cradle planner is worth loading to visualize exactly which Energy split hits all three of these breakpoints cleanly.
IMPLANTS AND A POST-PATCH NOTE
Head slot: Regen V4HeadSuperior (Superior) — 50% self-repair speed and 20% revive speed. With 100 HP base, your between-fight recovery window is everything.
Torso slot: Knife Fight V4TorsoSuperior (Superior) — 50 melee damage with the Escape Artist sub-perk. The fall resistance matters; Shadow Dive into a lower level is a real movement pattern on Outpost.
Legs slot: Bionic Leg Upgrades V4LegsSuperior (Superior) — the 50 Agility here keeps your sprint and repositioning speed at the level this shell needs to close distance before the knife window expires.
One honest note on post-patch gear acquisition: Superior and Prestige mod XP values were halved this update. If you were planning to use Prestige mod XP as your primary Cradle fuel, that path is slower now. The build still works — Shadow Strike and Silent Killer are cores, not mods, and cores weren't touched. But gear your timeline expectations accordingly and check /factions for current Armory availability across factions.
RANKED VIABILITY AND HOLOTAG TARGETING
This build is S-tier solo ranked at its ceiling, targeting the mid-to-high Holotag tiers where enemies are coordinated enough to be worth the setup but not so organized that a single knife opener invalidates the run. The Assassin's solo ranked rating is A — high risk, high reward, Holotag theft specialist by design. The knife engine specifically leans into that: you are not fighting the squad, you are removing their most valuable tag carrier and extracting. One confirmed Shadow Strike backstab on a top-tag holder is the entire loop. If the knife misses or the target is facing you, fall back into smoke, reset, and let the BR33 handle cleanup from distance. Patient runners who respect the reset condition will find this build genuinely oppressive on Outpost's multi-level geometry.
