Starting Shell Selection
With Marathon now live and ranked mode launching soon, choosing the right shell as a new Runner is crucial. Your shell choice affects both learning curve and ranked performance.
Best Beginner Shell: Vandal
Vandal is the optimal starting shell. Its Double Jump active provides crucial mobility and escape options, while Combat Flow passive rewards kills with movement speed. At 150 health and medium-fast speed, Vandal forgives positioning mistakes. In ranked, Vandal rates A-tier for both solo and squad play — making it the most versatile choice for new Runners learning Holotag mechanics.
Learning Alternative: Rook
Rook offers the lowest difficulty rating with Overclock active boosting reload and movement speed. Adaptive Frame reduces weapon swap penalties, helping you experiment with different loadouts. While Rook rates C-tier in ranked, it's perfect for learning extraction fundamentals before moving to specialist shells.
Avoid These Early
Assassin and Destroyer require high game knowledge. Assassin's stealth mechanics and 100 health demand perfect positioning, while Destroyer's slow speed needs squad coordination. Triage rates D-tier in solo ranked — avoid unless playing with friends.
Ranked Preparation
Since ranked mode launches with Holotag theft mechanics where death loses both gear and rank points, focus on shells that help you survive and extract. Vandal's vertical mobility lets you escape dangerous Holotag situations, making it ideal for learning ranked fundamentals.
Progression Path
Start with Vandal → learn extraction routes → experiment with Thief for solo ranked or Recon for squad play. Master one shell before switching — ranked rewards specialization over jack-of-all-trades approaches.
