WHY VANDAL IS HARD TO PUNISH
VandalCombat sits A-tier in ranked solo for a reason. Its kit is built around tempo — Amplify refreshes the heat bar and overcharges all movement abilities simultaneously, which means a good Vandal player dictates the pace of every engagement. Power Slide closes distance or creates it. Microjets deny vertical control. Disrupt Cannon creates knockback windows that break your positioning just as you think you have the angle.
The core problem most players have against Vandal is that they fight it on its terms. They hold a static position, get Disrupt Cannoned out of cover, then eat a Power Slide into close range while the Vandal is under Amplify's handling and ADS buffs. That is the loop Vandal wants. Break the loop and the shell becomes manageable.
Vandal has one persistent, exploitable window: the heat bar. Amplify refreshes it once per activation — after that, every Microjet, Power Slide, and Tactical Sprint generates heat on a now-depleted bar. A Vandal that has burned through its post-Amplify heat is slow, grounded, and committed to gunfighting without mobility options. That is the window you want.
THE COUNTER COMBINATION
The shell answer is ReconIntel. Early Warning System (Prestige core) gives you a HUD alert when a hostile Runner is nearby — you know Vandal is closing before it arrives. That changes your read entirely: instead of reacting to Power Slide, you're already repositioning when Amplify goes active. For weapons, build for the mid-range window Vandal has to pass through in every engagement. For your Cradle investment, the Endurance track matters here. The Quick Vent and Heat Dissipation perks (exact Energy breakpoints unconfirmed) reduce how long you stay heat-compromised after repositioning — important because Vandal will use Disrupt Cannon to force a panic move, and if your heat spikes right after, you lose the counter-window.
TIMING AND POSITIONAL DISCIPLINE
Vandal's Disrupt Cannon is the ability that kills most counter-attempts before they start. Avoid narrow corridors and tight cover choke points on Outpost especially — these are Disrupt Cannon paradise. If you are on Perimeter, the Tunnels and East Wall connector routes give you fallback geometry that limits the knockback vector.
The timing call: do not force the fight during Amplify. The buff lasts 30 seconds and refreshes the heat bar on activation. Your job in that window is to stay alive, not to win the trade. Hold mid-range, keep the Rangefinder Optic in play, and take disciplined damage-dealing shots — not a full commitment. When Amplify expires and Vandal tries to re-engage on depleted heat, that is the closing window. That is when the Twin Tap's burst cadence becomes lethal.
Recon's Echo Pulse also has specific value here — it pings Vandal through walls, which strips the one remaining edge a post-Amplify Vandal has: a reposition into a blind angle. No blind angles, no recovery. Close the fight out.
