Choosing Your First Ranked Shell
With ranked mode launching soon, new Runners face a critical decision: which shell to master first. Two shells dominate the starter meta — Vandal and Thief — but they serve completely different playstyles.
Vandal: The Reliable All-Rounder
Vandal earns A-tier ratings in both solo and squad ranked for good reason. This beginner-friendly shell works in any team composition and forgives positioning mistakes. Vandal excels with the M77 Assault Rifle equipped with Barrel Mod, creating a long-range configuration that dominates ranked sightlines. The versatility lets you adapt to any Holotag situation.
Thief: The Extraction Specialist
Thief takes S-tier solo ranked but requires different skills. Built around hitting Holotag targets and extracting safely, Thief uses its Drone ability to scout extraction routes. This shell rewards patience and positioning over direct combat. Pair Thief with V22 Volt Thrower for close-quarters Holotag steals.
The Ranked Reality
In ranked mode, death means losing both gear AND rank points. Vandal's forgiving nature makes climbing easier for new players. Thief offers higher carry potential but punishes mistakes harder. Consider your risk tolerance — Vandal builds consistent rank gains while Thief creates explosive climbs or devastating falls.
Recommended Path
Start with Vandal to learn ranked fundamentals. Master Holotag positioning, extraction timing, and squad coordination. Once comfortable, transition to Thief for solo climbs or specialized roles. Both shells scale well into higher tiers, making either a solid long-term investment.
Your shell choice shapes your entire ranked experience. Vandal teaches fundamentals; Thief teaches precision.
