SHOTGUN META SHIFT CONFIRMED
The WSTR Combat ShotgunShotgun just took a direct hit from Bungie's balance team. Game Director Joe Ziegler confirmed the weapon "will no longer be able to down an enemy player who has blue shields or above with two shots" as of Tuesday 4/21. For ranked players, this eliminates the most dominant close-quarters strategy of Season 1 and creates immediate opportunities for shells that were fighting uphill against WSTR dominance.
The WSTR's two-shot potential against shielded targets made it the defining weapon of aggressive ranked play. DestroyerCombat players could close distance with Riot Barricade and guarantee eliminations. AssassinStealth runners used WSTR for Phase Shift ambushes. Even VandalCombat builds prioritized WSTR over the V85 Circuit BreakerShotgun for reliable CQB trades. That calculation just changed completely.
IMMEDIATE WINNERS: ENERGY SHOTGUNS AND SMGs
The V85 Circuit Breaker becomes the clear WSTR replacement for ranked solo. With 20 damage per shot and 127 RPM, the V85 maintains consistent damage output that doesn't rely on two-shot eliminations. Pair it with Overcharge LensBarrel MODPrestige for enhanced charge efficiency and you have a shotgun that scales better into late-game ranked encounters where shield values matter.
SMG builds get the biggest indirect buff. The BRRT SMGSMG with Flechette Split ActionBarrel MODPrestige now competes directly with nerfed WSTR builds in CQB scenarios. The Copperhead RFSMG becomes viable for Vandal players who need reliable close-range backup for their V75 ScarAR primary. Most importantly, the Bully SMGSMG's 15 damage per shot at 540 RPM creates consistent elimination potential that the nerfed WSTR can't match.
Destroyer shell takes the hardest hit from this change. The entire Destroyer meta centered on WSTR's two-shot elimination guarantee. With that removed, Destroyer players need to completely rebuild their ranked approach. The Demolition HMGLMG becomes mandatory — 31 damage per shot means you're not dependent on burst elimination potential. Pair it with Impact Siphons core for shield energy return on Riot Barricade damage.
NEW RANKED LOADOUT PRIORITIES
Ranked players running WSTR builds need to swap immediately. For Assassin solo climbers, the V85 Circuit Breaker maintains your Phase Shift elimination potential without relying on shield-dependent burst damage. Add Shadow Strike core for increased Utility KnifeMelee damage from invisibility.
Vandal players should drop WSTR entirely and commit to the V75 Scar plus BRRT SMG combination. The V75's 18 damage at 120 RPM handles mid-range engagements while BRRT covers close quarters. Both weapons scale consistently regardless of enemy shield levels.
ThiefStealth builds were already optimal with speed-focused loadouts, but this patch creates new opportunities. The Light Carry passive pairs perfectly with energy weapons that don't suffer from the shield-dependent damage falloff that just killed WSTR builds. V22 Volt ThrowerSMG becomes a legitimate Thief CQB option.
The WSTR nerf eliminates the most oppressive close-quarters weapon in ranked play. Players who adapt to consistent damage weapons immediately gain advantage over those still trying to make burst-damage strategies work. This patch rewards weapon mastery over elimination gambling.
