RANKED IS GOING DARK
Ranked is going dark. In a Nightfall Refresh detail post, Marathon game director Del Chafe III confirmed that Ranked will NOT be available during the entire Nightfall Refresh, which runs Oct 6 through Dec 7. Bungie's stated reason: the team has ideas to make Ranked "more exciting and rewarding," those changes won't be ready for October, and rather than bring it back in its current form, they're using the window to keep working on it. More details to come.
Our read: for competitive players, this is the headline and it stings - a roughly two-month stretch with no ladder to climb, bridging right into the Symbiosis update on Dec 8. But the framing matters: this is a paused-for-rework, not a removal, and Bungie is filling the gap with a dense rotating schedule rather than going quiet. Whether the reworked Ranked justifies the wait is unknown until they show it - we won't guess the changes.
WHAT THE NIGHTFALL REFRESH ACTUALLY IS (CONFIRMED)
The Nightfall Refresh runs Oct 6 - Dec 7, bridging into the Symbiosis update on Dec 8. It resets progression and the in-game economy (confirmed in Bungie's earlier announcement) and layers a rotating schedule of modes on top. A free NucaloricConsumer Goods Reward Pass is available to everyone who owns Marathon - it isn't time-limited, so you can complete it at your own pace.
THE MODE SCHEDULE (CONFIRMED)
Here's what's playable, per the dev team's calendar:
- Sponsored Queues (kit-only Extraction) run every weekend, Thursday through Monday: Sponsored Perimeter in Week 1, Sponsored Marsh in Week 2, Sponsored Night Marsh in Week 3 - then that three-week rotation repeats until Symbiosis.
- Cryo Archive runs every week starting Thursday, Oct 15, and each weekly window ends on Monday.
- Vault Breaker (the existing limited PvE mode) returns Weeks 3 through 5.
- Sponsored Survival (sponsored-kit PvE with Rooks) rotates weekly from Week 6 through Perimeter, Day Marsh, Night Marsh, and Outpost.
- Enhanced Sponsored Kits roll out in Week 5 through the Symbiosis launch - a raised gear floor, responding to feedback that players want the baseline lifted after a few weeks.
- CARRI returns starting Week 3.
Regular Extraction remains available in each zone throughout.
Our read: the shape of this schedule is a tell. The emphasis is on sponsored kit-only modes (a level playing field, no gear-grind advantage) and a steady drip of PvE (Vault Breaker, then Sponsored Survival). That reads as Bungie using the Refresh to test how players engage with accessible, lower-friction and PvE-focused experiences - exactly the direction Symbiosis's permanent PvE points toward. If you're a competitive player waiting out the Ranked gap, the sponsored queues are the closest thing to a level fight available.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR RANKED DATA
With Ranked offline Oct 6 - Dec 7, the current ranked shell tiers and competitive meta are effectively frozen as of the last ranked season. We'll hold the pre-pause tier picture as reference (see our Ranked page at /marathon/ranked) and re-verify the moment Ranked returns in its reworked form - because a reworked Ranked may reshuffle the entire competitive picture.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Ranked pauses Oct 6 for a rework, with no confirmed return date beyond "not during the Refresh." In its place: a rotating three-week sponsored-queue schedule, weekly Cryo Archive, and an escalating PvE offering, all bridging into Symbiosis on Dec 8. Our read: if you live on the ladder, the next two months are a dead zone - use them to learn shells in the sponsored queues, where kit advantages are stripped out and it's the closest thing to a fair fight. If you're PvE-curious, this is the ramp Bungie built for you.
