THE DISCONNECT IS DEAFENING
Marathon's community is in an unusual place this week. Reddit posted zero meaningful discussion about the new Cryo Archive mode that requires Runner Level 25 and all six factions unlocked. Meanwhile, Steam reviews continue focusing on the fundamentals — gunplay, learning curve, and the extraction shooter positioning between Tarkov and Arc Raiders.
The most telling Reddit thread? "Game crashes when loading into lobby!!" by u/OryxSonCROTA with zero engagement. That's the state of r/MarathonTheGame right now — technical complaints in empty rooms.
STEAM TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY
Steam reviewers with 50+ hours are largely positive and focused on core gameplay. A 62-hour player calls Marathon "best balance in terms of time investment and skill development in the Extraction Shooter genre." Another 56-hour reviewer notes it "fits nicely between Escape from Tarkov and Arc Raiders" but warns the "learning curve is not as easy."
The negative Steam reviews reveal onboarding problems, not fundamental gameplay issues. One 14-hour player tried "to give this a real go" but found "join mid wipe has been the most awful experience." A 51-hour reviewer questions the genre choice entirely: "Why in the genuine ♥♥♥♥ did they not just make this an actual follow-up to Marathon Infinity."
THE VAULT KEY HUNT
The few engaged Reddit users are deep into high-level content. u/yeetpraylovex finally got a Vault 6 key and admits "I don't know the map well" but wants to learn. u/N3wPaiN is actively recruiting for Cryo runs and vault attempts. This suggests the dedicated players are grinding endgame while newcomers struggle with basics.
The community that's still talking is focused on mastery-level content — vault keys, compiler takedowns, and teaching runs. The broader conversation has moved elsewhere or simply stopped happening on Reddit.
Steam reviews show Marathon has found its audience among extraction shooter veterans, but onboarding remains brutal for newcomers. Reddit's silence on major content drops suggests the vocal community has either moved to Discord or given up on public discussion entirely. That disconnect between engaged Steam players and silent Reddit communities is the real story here.
