Complete Beginner's Faction Guide: Which Faction to Level First

faction-guideprogressionbeginnerresource-management

Understanding the Faction System

Marathon's six factions — Arachne, Cyberacme, Mida, Nucaloric, Sekiguchi, and Traxus — are your gateway to powerful upgrades. Each faction offers unique weapons, mods, implants, and permanent stat bonuses locked behind rank requirements. New Runners often waste time leveling the wrong faction first, missing crucial early-game advantages.

Priority Faction #1: Cyberacme

Cyberacme should be your first faction focus for three critical reasons. First, HEAT_SINK.EXE at Rank 1 costs only 2,500 CR and 12 Unstable Biomass for +20 Heat Capacity — essential for sustained firefights. Second, SCAVENGER.EXE at Rank 1 boosts Loot Speed by +20 for just 750 CR, accelerating your early progression. Third, QUICK_VENT.EXE at Rank 4 reduces Heat Recovery Speed by 20 for 2,500 CR and 8 Unstable Gel.

These three upgrades transform your shell's sustainability. Heat Capacity lets you fire longer before overheating. Faster loot speed means quicker container clearing and reduced exposure time. Improved heat recovery keeps you in fights longer.

Priority Faction #2: Sekiguchi

Sekiguchi becomes crucial once you hit Rank 2. TAC_AMP.EXE costs 750 CR and 16 Unstable Diode for +30 Tactical Recovery — reducing your tactical ability cooldowns significantly. This upgrade benefits every shell, making Shadow Dive, Thruster, and Overclock available more frequently.

At Rank 4, HEAD_START.EXE for 1,500 CR, 10 Storage Drive, and 10 Unstable Diode partially fills your tactical ability at run start. Combined with TAC_AMP.EXE, you become substantially more aggressive in early fights.

Early Game Material Priority

Focus on Unstable materials first — Unstable Biomass, Unstable Diode, and Unstable Gel appear frequently in low-tier containers. These materials unlock your most impactful early upgrades. Storage Drives and Dynamic Compounds become important around Rank 10+ but aren't priorities initially.

Faction Specialization Strategy

After establishing Cyberacme and Sekiguchi foundations, specialize based on your preferred shell:

-

Combat Shells (Destroyer/Vandal)

: Arachne for HARD_STRIKE.EXE (+20 Melee Damage) and CUTTHROAT.EXE (+20 Finisher Siphon) -

Stealth Shells (Assassin/Thief)

: Mida for FLEX_MATRIX.EXE (+20 Agility) and ANTI_VIRUS.EXE (+40s protection) -

Support Players (Triage/Recon)

: Nucaloric for REINFORCE.EXE (+20 Hardware) and UNFAZED.EXE (+20 Firewall)

Mid-Game Faction Goals

By Rank 15-20, target these game-changing upgrades:

- Traxus TRACKER.EXE at Rank 15: +30 Ping Duration for 2,000 CR, 7 Anomalous Wire, 21 Plastic Filament - Arachne REBOOT.EXE at Rank 19: +20 Revive Speed for 3,500 CR, 5 Reflex Coil, 5 Biomata Node - Sekiguchi TAC_AMP.EXE upgrade at Rank 14: Additional +30 Tactical Recovery

Resource Management Tips

Never spend credits randomly. Calculate total costs for your next 3-4 planned upgrades before purchasing anything. Stockpile rare materials like Reflex Coil, Biomata Node, and Paradox Circuits — they become bottlenecks at higher ranks.

Focus faction missions over free exploration initially. Mission rewards provide guaranteed faction XP and targeted materials. Each faction level unlocks multiple upgrade tiers, making consistent progression more valuable than scattered advancement.

Three Key Takeaways

1.

Start with Cyberacme Rank 1-4

— Heat Capacity, Loot Speed, and Heat Recovery create immediate combat advantages for minimal investment 2.

Add Sekiguchi Tactical Recovery

— +30 Tactical Recovery at Rank 2 benefits every shell and playstyle universally 3.

Specialize after foundations

— Choose your third faction based on shell preference and combat role for maximum efficiency
