Marathon Update 1.1.5: Patch Impact on Rook, Sentinel, and the Meta

WHAT JUST LANDED

Update 1.1.5 dropped today alongside the Vault Breaker PvE mode, and it carries more competitive weight than a mid-season patch usually would. The grenade infil cap introduced last patch already started reshaping loadout composition — this update doubles down on that direction while touching shells that have been sitting quietly on the fringe. Player reaction to the specifics is not yet available; the patch just landed and the community hasn't had time to stress-test the changes. What follows is the structural read from the notes alone.

The two changes with the longest competitive tail are the Rook - Scavenger buff and the Sentinel - Combat kit tuning. Neither is dramatic in isolation. Together, they point toward where the tier floor is shifting.

ROOK GETS A REAL RECOVERY TOOL

Recuperation's heal rate climbs from 2hp/s to 3hp/s, and the healing duration extends from 20 seconds to 30 seconds. Bungie's dev note is candid: overall healing has been more than doubled. That is not a rounding error. Rook's scavenger identity was always bottlenecked by how fragile it felt after a bad trade — you were hunting Patch Kits you couldn't afford to spend because the next squad was already rotating. The buffed Recuperation changes that calculus meaningfully. You can now recover from a skirmish without burning a consumable slot, which matters most in the deep-loot Cryo Archive runs where Nucaloric - Consumer Goods armory stock may not stretch across a full session.

This doesn't make Rook a ranked pick — the kit still lacks the aggression tools that matter for Holotag hunting. But it moves the shell from a liability against attrition to a genuine self-sustaining scavenger. I'm moving Rook to C-tier: real now, not theoretical.

SENTINEL GETS THREE MEANINGFUL NUDGES

Defender System cooldown drops from 180s to 150s — a 17% reduction that meaningfully changes how often you can anchor a vault or a contested exfil point. Snare Mine submunition damage increases from 5 to 7 against Runners and 30 to 35 against non-Runners. And critically: Prey Tracker is no longer scrambled by Signal Jammer.

That last change is the one to watch. Signal Jammer was the clean, low-cost answer to Prey Tracker's motion detection — Vandal - Combat's Low Profile core, Sneak Pack backpacks, any Jammer source. That counter no longer functions against Sentinel's radar. In a lobby where Vandal, Thief - Stealth stealth plays, and Sneak Pack runners are common, Prey Tracker just became a genuinely useful passive rather than something opponents could switch off for free. The Sentinel is still not a meta-dominant pick — its floor is too conditional — but it is no longer a D-tier consideration. I'm grading it at B and expect adoption to rise, especially in squad compositions running Cryo Archive where the Defender System's explosive-intercept value is highest.

INVISIBILITY NERFS AND THE ASSASSIN RECALIBRATION

Invisibility now flickers off after more than 2 seconds of sprinting, and AI combatants can now hear invisible players at very close range. This is a systemic change hitting every invisibility source — Assassin - Stealth, Thief's Shroud-adjacent plays, Sneak Pack backpack utility, all of it. The Assassin's Shadow Dive cooldown dropping from 60s to 45s is the compensatory tool Bungie is handing back. It helps disengage frequency but doesn't undo the new sprint discipline requirement on Active Camo. The Assassin remains an A-tier pick — the Holotag theft angle is intact and the Smoke Screen kit is more complex than pure invisibility uptime — but the playstyle is now more intentional, less forgiving of players who sprint cloaked through open ground. Rank implications: the Assassin's solo ranked edge (A-tier) holds, but execution cost just went up.

THE RANKED TABLE THIS CYCLE

Vault Breaker running on Cryo Archive through August 4th means the endgame map is seeing more traffic than usual — and the Cradle Evolution system (active at level 70, up to 7 evolutions, each extending the Energy cap by 1) gives invested players a new optimization ceiling to chase. Sentinel's Defender System value spikes specifically in Cryo, where grenade spam was most complained about and is now doubly capped. If you are climbing ranked squads through Cryo Archive sessions, the Sentinel slot is worth reconsidering before the community catches on.

Twin Tap climbing from D to B is the real signal here—that's a weapon getting its legs back, and it means the grenade infil cap is actually forcing loadout diversity instead of just flattening it. Bully dropping to A makes sense if the meta's shifting toward utility over raw close-range pressure, but the shell tier shifts matter more and the article doesn't name them; can't assess a shell regrade without knowing direction. If Rook or Sentinel are finally competitive after sitting fringe, that's worth building around—but you'll need the actual tiers to know if it's a Cradle respec or a full swap.

Bully SMG's drop to A is the only move here with teeth—that's a signal the grenade infil cap is real enough to hurt sustained close-range pressure, which was the gun's whole job. Twin Tap climbing from D to B reads like recalibration noise unless the article's citing a mechanical buff I'm not seeing; lateral jumps that wide without patch detail attached are suspect. Shell changes are redacted, so reserve judgment there.

The Bully's drop from S to A reads like the patch finally caught up with what loadout theory already knew—grenade infil caps forced players to choose between raw output and utility, and raw stopped winning that trade. For new players: that's your signal to stop chasing the tier-one name and instead build around what your shell needs to *function*, not what ranked players were grinding six months ago. The Twin Tap's climb suggests NEXUS found its niche in the new economy; worth testing if you've got access to it, but don't rebuild around a single weapon move—Cradle's free respec means you can afford to experiment without fear.
