THE DISCONNECT IS REAL
Bungie just admitted Marathon is "overwhelming to learn" and "too much of a hardcore sweat-fiesta." Game Director Joe Ziegler says Season 2 will focus on finding "that chill moment" because the current game is too niche. Steam's veteran playerbase? They're not buying it.
The most telling review came from a 278-hour player: "Marathon is the first shooter I have gotten genuinely hooked on like this since playing Titanfall 2... when it did the gameplay loop was like crack." That's exactly the addiction Bungie says they need to tone down. Another 168-hour veteran was even more direct: "THIS IS THE MOST ADDICTING GAME IVE EVER PLAYED IN MY LIFE AND IF YOU DONT LIKE IT YOURE JUST BAD AT GAMES!!!!!!!!"
VETERANS VERSUS NEWCOMERS
The Steam review split tells the real story. Players with 75+ hours are overwhelmingly positive about Marathon's current state. A 98-hour player captured it perfectly: "Good if you like your game to be actively hostile and punishing to you, but still feel like you get better as you go on." That's the exact hostility Bungie wants to reduce.
The few negative voices come from shorter playtimes, but they're drowned out by the dedication of the hardcore base. One 89-hour player admitted: "Never thought I would like an extraction shooter ... let alone love one. Well done Bungo." These aren't casual players asking for accessibility — they're converts who fell in love with the difficulty curve.
THE SEASON 2 PROBLEM
Bungie's Season 2 roadmap promises less grind, smoother onboarding, and accessibility improvements. But their most engaged players aren't asking for any of that. The 163-hour reviewer praised Marathon specifically because it "encourages a faster pace at higher levels" — the opposite of casual-friendly design.
A 28-hour player summed up what the hardcore community values: "the sheer hostility of it is intoxicating." That's not a bug to fix. That's the feature keeping people engaged for 200+ hours.
The community Bungie built loves the sweat. Whether Season 2's accessibility push can grow the playerbase without alienating the diehards who currently carry the game remains the biggest question heading into June 2nd.
