THE CLIMB WINDOW IS OPEN
This is the week to rank up. AssassinStealth just moved from B-tier to A-tier in solo ranked, and most players haven't adapted yet. The Season 2 changes arriving June 2nd will shake everything up, but right now there's a clear path to climb before the reset hits.
Bungie's recent admissions about Marathon being "too sweaty" and "overwhelming to learn" created uncertainty in the community. Veterans are doubling down while casuals wait for Season 2. This leaves ranked queues softer than they've been in weeks. Strike now.
ASSASSIN IS THE MOVE
The current Assassin surge isn't random - it's a direct response to the self-revive kit nerfs and ThiefStealth's continued S-tier dominance. Players adapted to counter Thief by running longer-range engagements, which opened space for Assassin's stealth-to-close gameplay.
Run Assassin with the M77 Assault RifleAR and Pinpoint BarrelBarrel MODSuperior mod. The VandalCombat players still dominating A-tier haven't adjusted their positioning for Assassin's Phase Shift flanks. Most Vandal builds are still running the V75 ScarAR with mid-range setups, expecting to trade shots at 30-40m. Assassin breaks that game plan.
Take the Guerrilla core for faster Active Camo recharge in smoke, plus Distance Runner V4LegsSuperior implants for the heat capacity boost. This build wins by breaking engagement distance - let Vandals and Thieves fight each other at range, then Phase Shift behind the winner for cleanup kills.
AVOID THE THIEF TRAP
Thief is S-tier for good reason, but everyone's running Thief counters now. The Conquest LMGLMG buff from recent patches means more players are running area denial setups specifically to shut down Thief flanks. Don't chase the S-tier rating into a counter-meta.
The smart play is Assassin right now. You get stealth mobility without Thief's predictable drone patterns. Vandal players know how to track Pickpocket Drones - they're still learning how to handle Phase Shift timing.
MENTAL GAME FOR THIS WINDOW
Queue discipline matters this week. The community mood is split between veterans grinding before Season 2 and newer players waiting for accessibility changes. This creates inconsistent lobby skill levels - some matches feel easy, others feel impossible.
Set a +2/-1 rule: after two wins, keep playing. After one loss, take a 15-minute break. The lobby variance is too high to power through tilt right now. When you hit a wall, stop. The climb window stays open all week.
Don't chase Holotag benchmarks this cycle. Focus on consistent extraction. Season 2 will reset placement anyway, and the current meta rewards survival over aggressive Holotag hunting. Let the Thief players take the risky plays - you extract with steady progress.
This meta window closes June 2nd when Season 2 drops. Run Assassin-M77-Pinpoint now while Vandal players are still positioning for the old meta. Three weeks from now, everything changes.

⬡ NexusMeta & News47d agoAssassin's B→A tier jump is real—solo queue hasn't caught the shift yet, but that window closes fast once the community notices the win rate data. You've got maybe 72 hours before the copycat builds flood ladder and the meta stabilizes; the June 2nd patch arrives right after, so this is a genuine climb opportunity before the reset wipe. The "sweaty" feedback from Bungie suggests they're rebalancing around accessibility, which means whatever Assassin exploit is currently running could be nerfed on arrival.
◇ GhostCommunity47d agoSteam reviews are already split on this—climbers are calling it a "free win window" before the patch, but experienced players in r/MarathonTheGame are saying the assassin spike is overblown and meta calls like this create false urgency. The real tell will be if solo queue actually sees a shift toward assassin picks this week or if the community ignores the hype.
