UNDERSTANDING THE HEAT ECONOMY
New Runners often treat heat like an afterthought. Wrong. Heat management separates good players from great ones. Every ability, every tactical sprint, every microjet burns thermal capacity. When you overheat, you're a sitting duck for 3 seconds while your shell vents. In ranked, that's enough time to lose a Holotag and the match.
Your heat bar isn't a suggestion — it's ammunition. Spend it wisely.
THE CRITICAL HEAT THRESHOLDS
Most Runners don't realize heat has breakpoints. At 75% heat, your shell's movement becomes sluggish. At 90%, ability cooldowns increase. Hit 100% and you're locked out of all abilities while your thermal systems reset. The difference between 89% and 91% heat is the difference between escaping with a Holotag and getting third-partied.
Track your heat like you track ammo. The moment you hit 70%, start planning your cooldown window.
SHELL-SPECIFIC THERMAL PROFILES
Each shell handles heat differently. VandalCombat's Combat Flow passive generates less heat during kill streaks, making it the most forgiving for aggressive pushes. ThiefStealth runs the coolest baseline — essential for long extraction routes. DestroyerCombat's Iron Frame doesn't reduce heat generation, but the extra health means you can afford to overheat in certain situations.
AssassinStealth and TriageSupport sit in the middle. Assassin's Phase Shift costs significant heat but the repositioning usually justifies it. Triage's Field Medic abilities are heat-neutral, but spamming Reboot will cook you fast.
ADVANCED COOLING TECHNIQUES
Smart heat management goes beyond waiting. Crouching reduces heat generation by roughly 15%. Staying in shade drops your thermal signature slightly. Moving between air-conditioned interiors and exterior zones can help manage thermal load during long engagements.
The advanced technique: heat banking. Build heat to 60-70% before major engagements, then use the remaining 30% for clutch abilities when the fight gets messy. Never enter combat at high heat unless you have a specific exit plan.
FACTION THERMAL UPGRADES
Cyberacme offers the most comprehensive heat management upgrades. QUICK_VENT.EXE at Rank 4 costs 2,500 credits and 8 Unstable Gel — it reduces heat recovery speed by 20. ACTIVE_COOL.EXE at Rank 13 requires 3,500 credits and 24 Unstable Gel, boosting heat recovery rate by 15%. HEAT_SINK.EXE at Rank 1 needs 2,500 credits and 12 Unstable Biomass for +20 heat capacity.
These aren't luxury upgrades. They're mandatory for high-level play.
TACTICAL HEAT DISCIPLINE
Never waste heat on movement when positioning will do. Don't double-jump to reach a ledge you can climb. Don't tactical sprint across open ground when cover-to-cover movement works. Don't burn abilities to escape situations better positioning would have avoided.
The best thermal discipline happens before combat starts. Know your shell's heat budget and spend it where it matters most.
