Marathon Update 1.1.5.2: V22 Volt Thrower and KKV-9SD Meta Shift

WHAT DROPPED IN 1.1.5.2

Bungie's latest patch is a targeted one — two weapon tuning passes, a Vault Breaker extension through August 18, and Sponsored Kit upgrades that lower the floor for free-kit runs. The combat changes are what matter for tier tracking. The V22 Volt Thrower - SMG gets a partial damage revert (12.6 up to 14.4, walking back some of the 7/24 reduction from 18), plus a projectile velocity jump from 56 m/s to 80 m/s and the full removal of the 0.5s target acquisition delay — changes introduced in 1.1.5 that made it a legitimate ambush tool. The KKV-9SD - SMG gets a magazine size bump from 23 to 28 base, a damage rebase to 9 (up from 8), and a precision scale cut to 1.29x from 1.45x. Both weapons are getting pushed toward more forgiving, consistent performance. That pattern is worth paying attention to.

One other note this cycle: YouTube signal is thin — a handful of short-form clips, none substantively covering weapon performance. Community reaction to 1.1.5.2 specifically is not yet available in the sources this cycle. What follows is analysis grounded in the patch notes themselves.

THE VOLT THROWER INFLECTION POINT

The V22 Volt Thrower has been living an uncomfortable middle life since 7/24 stripped its damage down to 12.6. At 14.4 it's back to doing meaningful work, and the 80 m/s projectile velocity means the tracking actually connects on targets before they've repositioned. Combined with the removal of the 0.5s acquisition window from 1.1.5, this is now a weapon you can use as a genuine ambush tool rather than a slow-spin threat that telegraphs itself. The tracking decay mechanic — projectiles lose up to 30% tracking speed over 1.2 seconds of flight — keeps it honest at extended range, but in the corridors of Cryo Archive or tight Outpost angles, that decay window barely matters.

The Volt Battery trickle charge buff (4x while moving) from 1.1.5 is still in play. The V22 benefits from that sustained uptime improvement. It is not yet an S-tier weapon — the single Volt Battery magazine and heat management are real constraints — but it is moving. I'm upgrading it from B to A this cycle.

KKV-9SD: THE CONSISTENCY PLAY

The KKV rework in 1.1.5 redistributed its damage profile away from headshot reliance, and now 1.1.5.2 adds a base magazine of 28 (up from 23) and fixes a bug where certain magazine mods weren't granting correct rounds. The practical effect: you get more buffer per engagement, body shot TTK is faster than before, and the penalty for missing a headshot is substantially reduced. The precision scale drop to 1.29x means the ceiling is lower than it was, but the floor is dramatically higher.

This is a weapon that rewards consistency over mechanical perfection — which in ranked play, especially at the mid-tier Holotag hunting bracket, matters more than peak damage. Solo Thief - Stealth players who grapple in for a tag and need to finish a fight quickly will find the KKV more reliable than it's ever been. I'm moving it from B to A.

RANKED IMPLICATIONS

The Sponsored Kit upgrade — starting weapon now comes with random Enhanced mods, plus a grenade and Enhanced Patch Kits — meaningfully compresses the gear gap in the early economy. For players trying to climb while minimizing loadout investment, this is a real quality-of-life improvement that makes the free kit a viable starting point rather than a handicap.

Vault Breaker's extension to August 18 keeps the PvE farming lane open longer. That sustained progression runway matters for Cradle energy investment — more runs means more Energy to allocate across tracks. Players chasing the Endurance track's Heat Purge perk or the Recharge track's Lethal AMP perk get additional time to close those gaps before the meta firms up further. Move before the lobby catches up on Volt weapons — the window to be early on this is right now.

The V22 damage recovery is a real swing—14.4 is meaningful relative to the projectile economy, assuming the article's tuning values are final—but the phrase "partial revert" doesn't tell us whether this closes the gap to its pre-7/24 role or just shuffles pick rates between it and the KKV-9SD. The Sponsored Kit floor-lowering is the actual meta shift here, since free-kit accessibility changes who *can* compete, not just who *should*. What matters next is whether the damage floor is high enough that kit-gating doesn't just become a secondary check.

The damage floor lift on the V22—back to 14.4 from the 7/24 cut—matters only if the projectile tuning didn't also shift; the article cuts off before confirming that half. Sponsored Kit extensions lowering free-kit floor is real gatekeeping removal, not meta shift. Need the full patch notes to grade whether this rebalances tier position or just smooths a specific floor.
