Marathon WSTR Combat Shotgun Build: Mid-Season Buff Guide

LOADOUT GRADE8.2
weaponsshellsthiefmods

THE BUFF AND WHAT IT ACTUALLY MEANS

The mid-season 2 update landing July 21st brings the WSTR Combat Shotgun - Shotgun back into conversation, and if you are sleeping on this change, you are leaving a weapon back on the table. Damage up from 85 to 100 per pellet. That number matters — Bungie has published explicit 2HKO range tables in the patch preview, and the WSTR can now two-shot a grey-shield target at 7 meters with a max-invested build, and a purple-shield target at 4 meters. Those are real breakpoints, not vibes.

The tradeoffs are equally real and you need to price them in before you build around this weapon. Spread increased by 20% across all stat tiers. Aim assist falloff tightened. Precision bonus multiplier removed (now 1.0x — pellet volume is the mechanic, not headshot fishing). Minimum damage at max falloff dropped from 20% to 10%, which means the WSTR punishes you harder for taking fights at the wrong distance than it did before. The design intent is clear: this is a point-blank finisher, not a flex-range brawler. Build it that way.

THE WSTR BUILD: CORE LOADOUT

The WSTR's rebuffed identity demands you get close and stay close, which makes shell choice decisive. Thief - Stealth is the right answer here. The Grapple Device closes distance on demand — you pick your engagement range, not your opponent — and The Finer Things trait rewards a full backpack with faster weapon handling and faster Grapple Device recharge, which means a loaded Thief is also a faster Thief. The synergy between mobility-on-demand and a hard-range-limited shotgun is not incidental; it is the win condition.

The win condition: grapple into the 4-7 meter window, land two WSTR shells on target, and extract before anyone processes what happened. Thief's X-Ray Visor confirms target positions through walls before you commit to the grapple. You are not brawling — you are executing a pre-planned entry.

Mod selection on the WSTR needs to address the core tension: the spread increase hurts consistency. The ** MIPS Slug Converter - Barrel MOD - Prestige (Prestige barrel mod, WSTR-specific) is the obvious pick — it sources listed as increasing rate of fire, stability, and aim, which directly tightens the pellet pattern and lets you get shots off faster in that narrow window. For the chip slot, See Ya** (Superior) is underrated here: empty-mag reloads trigger a brief invisibility, which gives you a reset window after your two-shot attempt if the target survives. That is a real safety valve on a build that deliberately takes close-range fights with a small magazine.

Magazine side: the WSTR ships with a 4-round mag (source-listed), so you need to be disciplined. Hi-Speed Mag (Superior) is your backup if the MIPS Slug Converter is not accessible — reported as improving reload speed and adding 3 rounds, which gives you a third and fourth attempt without full exposure.

CRADLE PATH

Because respec is free, you can dial in the exact Cradle profile for this build and adjust if the meta shifts post-patch. Thief's mobility engine runs hot, so the Endurance track is your anchor. Reach the Quick Vent perk (3 Energy) first for faster heat recovery after grapple chains, then push to Heat Dissipation at 9 Energy to keep the engine running across multi-floor engagements. Secondary investment goes into Dexterity — the Agility stat increase directly feeds movement speed and grapple repositioning. Full Throttle at 14 Energy (Cardio Kick effects at run start) means you hit the ground with your first grapple ready faster than baseline. Use the Cradle planner at /cradle to map this path before you commit your Energy.

IMPLANTS, CORES, AND RANKED VIABILITY

Implant shape: ** Bionic Leg Upgrades V4 - Legs - Superior (Superior Legs) for the Agility bump that compounds on The Finer Things, and Knife Fight V4 - Torso - Superior (Superior Torso) for melee damage — Thief's grapple-into-melee combo via the Hit and Run** Deluxe Core is a clean follow-up when you land in range and the target is already pressured. Hit and Run is the core that matters most here: grapple strike into Hack plus random loot ejection is pressure and economy simultaneously.

For the head slot, ** Energy Harvesting V4 - Head - Superior** gives Tactical Recovery, which means your Grapple Device recharges faster between engagements — exactly what this build needs.

One honest caveat: the WSTR's 20% spread increase means your execution needs to be cleaner than pre-patch. At 2-4 meters against purple shields, a partial pellet hit will not finish the job. This build is high-ceiling, moderate floor — experienced players will get the most from it, and newcomers may find the range discipline frustrating. If you are still learning Thief's grapple timing, the complexity cost is real. That said, the WSTR buff is the most significant shotgun change of mid-season 2. Build for it now, before the lobbies figure out how to play around it.

The WSTR targets Solo S-tier Holotag play at the top of Thief's ranked ceiling. This is a finisher build, not a sustain build — if you need to win a war of attrition, run something else.

The 85→100 damage floor is the real tell here—it's the threshold where grey shields stop eating a second pellet, which compresses your optimal engagement window but also removes the scaling penalty you had before. That's the shift: the WSTR stops being a "hope for a cleanup" tool and becomes a genuine close-range threat again, which matters if the mid-range meta is softening. Whether this actually *moves* the needle depends on whether the map geometry and primary engagement distances reward that tight window—watch for adoption clips at under-20m encounters to see if it's a real meta nudge or just patch notes relief.

The 15-point damage bump is real leverage—grey-shield two-shots open sightlines you didn't have before. But the article's confidence outpaces what it actually proves; "explicit range tables" sound authoritative until you remember mid-season patches often ship with silent adjustments. Run the WSTR in your next few matches and trust your hands over the patch notes—that's how you'll know if this is a genuine meta shift or just a competent cleanup.
