THE TIMING DEBATE
The Marathon community is split on Bungie's final Season 1 patch dropping May 19, just two weeks before the Season 2 reset. Steam reviews show measured optimism from long-term players, but the timing has sparked debate across community channels.
"Maps good, progression system fun, hated for no reason, best fps in at least the past few years," writes one 339-hour reviewer, capturing the sentiment among Marathon's core base. But the patch timing tells a different story in community discussions.
ROOK BUFFS: TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE?
The RookFlex shell finally received meaningful buffs in the May 19 update, but veteran runners are questioning why these changes came so late in Season 1. Steam reviewers with 100+ hours largely welcome the adjustments, seeing them as validation of their feedback throughout the season.
However, newer players remain skeptical. One 5-hour reviewer perfectly captures the newcomer frustration: "i've only got 4 hours in this game so far and honestly that might be all i can manage... i just can't bring myself to load into this game and collect as much loot as i can, to then just be reduced to 0hp by someone."
The Rook buffs may help with this exact problem, but they're arriving as many casual players have already moved on.
FACTION XP INCREASES MEET RESET REALITY
The patch increased faction XP gains across the board, but community sentiment is lukewarm given the imminent Season 2 reset on June 2. Long-term players see it as "better late than never," while newer players view it as meaningless.
"The way the culture has shifted in the last few years due to massive games failing in unprecedented fashion has rotted (even more) the brains of gamers into hoping and PRAYING every new game dies no matter what," observes one 190-hour reviewer, highlighting the broader skepticism Marathon faces.
TEMPLATE CHANGES AND ESCALATION CONCERNS
The shift from Compromised to Fragile templates and the introduction of escalating UESC forces has generated mixed reactions. Hardcore players appreciate the increased challenge, but casual players worry about an even steeper learning curve.
One balanced take from a 33-hour player: "lot of people assume casuals wont enjoy it but if you literally just remember u will lose stuff, playing is fun and also the game design alone makes it well worth it."
THE BROADER PICTURE
Steam's "Very Positive" rating masks a community divided along experience lines. Players with 80+ hours consistently praise the core gameplay loop, while sub-20-hour players express frustration with the learning curve and retention issues.
The May 19 patch addresses many long-standing concerns, but its timing—so close to the Season 2 reset—has left many wondering if Bungie is listening to feedback fast enough. As one reviewer puts it: "marathon is such a good game when you aint got a ----- in your ear telling you its not."
Season 2's success may depend on whether Bungie can implement community feedback faster than they did in Season 1.
