Week 2 of Marathon ranked has exposed a critical vulnerability: stream sniping. As community runner @Nirvous_ reported, targeted cheating is making ranked "literally unplayable" for content creators and high-visibility players. But regular Runners aren't immune — understanding these tactics helps you avoid becoming collateral damage.
STREAM SNIPER TACTICS AND IDENTIFICATION
Stream snipers gain unfair advantages by watching your broadcast to know your exact location, loadout, and extraction plans. They typically exhibit suspicious behaviors: appearing exactly where you're headed, pre-firing common angles you haven't revealed yet, or rotating to cut off extraction routes they shouldn't know about. In Holotag matches, they'll camp extraction points or trail Holotag carriers with impossible timing.
COUNTER-STRATEGIES FOR ALL RUNNERS
Even if you don't stream, these tactics protect you from any intel-based cheating. Vary your routes — never take the same path to extraction twice in a session. Use shells with intel advantages: Recon's Tracker Drone spots suspicious positioning patterns, while Thief's X-Ray Visor reveals enemies camping extraction chokes. When carrying high-value Holotags, take unexpected rotations through less popular zones.
RANKED PROTECTION MEASURES
For streamers: implement 2-3 minute delays during ranked sessions. The Holotag economy moves too fast for delayed intel to remain useful. Queue dodge suspicious lobbies — if the same names appear in multiple games with impossible game knowledge, back out and re-queue. Report consistently through Steam and Marathon's systems.
CLIMBING DESPITE CHEATERS
Focus on fundamentals cheaters can't counter: positioning discipline, aim training, and team communication in duo queue. Shells like Vandal and Destroyer excel here — their direct combat abilities don't rely on information advantages. Remember: cheaters typically target high-profile players and streamers more than regular climbers.
If you remember nothing else: vary your patterns, use intel-gathering shells, and report consistently. Stream sniping thrives on predictability.
